So Fresh and So Green

The Small but Mighty Greens

A simple way to shake things up is by picking up a few fresh ingredients. Though we harp on picking up quality ingredients for the main pieces, grabbing a handful of fresh herbs can do wonders. Not only do they taste and smell nice, but they look great too. For a couple dollars, you can pick up almost any mainstream green herb at your local grocery store or market, but if you’re looking for a shortlist, here are our favorites.

It may just be impossible not to love dill. Dill pickles, dill beans, dill chips, they’re all fan favorites and for good reason. It works great on its own with, say, a Lemon Dill Salmon Steak or in a medley of other green herbs. Quick tip, keep it dry. If you put it in the fridge or let it sit wet it will quickly go bad.

Rosemary is one of those herbs that brightens up a dish. It can be minced and thrown in as part of an herb seasoning but we often toss a whole sprig into whatever it is we’re cooking. The flavors naturally seep out of the herb and into your skillet and then when you’re finished its easily removed (or placed on top for style points.)

There’s no question that basil is an absolute fundamental herb, and no matter if it’s fresh or dried it should be on hand at any moment’s notice. Basil can go with your tomato based sauces or pizzas and it also goes nicely in salads or salad dressings. It’s also a go-to for eggs on the weekend. You really can’t go wrong.

If Basil is an absolute fundamental then parsley is of equal, if not greater, importance. Similarly, it goes with everything: red meat, white meat, fish, salads, dressings - it’s even a common garnish. Unlike cilantro, you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t like parsley. Think of it as the white button up of herbs.

Herbs often get overlooked as they’re seen as something that would only be useful for someone who cooks often, but if you only pick up one or two a week, you can get creative and give your dishes (and drinks) a little bit extra. They’ll be worth the extra couple bucks, if not for the insta pics alone!
